Health insurance terms, explained in plain language
Premium, deductible, copay, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximum. Here is what each one actually means and how they work together.
- Premium is what you pay to have coverage. Everything else is what you pay to use it.
- A low monthly premium usually means a higher deductible, and the reverse is also true.
- The out-of-pocket maximum is your real worst-case number for in-network care.
